The "Despatch No. 9" is a sea-going Diesel Tug, which is slightly larger then the average harbor type tug. The main difference is in the larger accommodations and more equipment to make long passages possible.

The Diesel Tug "Despatch No. 9" was built by the Tampa Marine Corporation of Tampa, Florida in 1945 and is one of the fleet of tugs operating in the bay areas of Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers for the Standard Oil Company of California. The power of these small ships is incredible...they are capable of towing large strings of barges in and out of their piers.
