In 1918, Alexander Graham Bell and his team built the sixty-foot long HD-4. It ran two 350-horsepower Liberty engines and began to rise off the water at 15 mph and rose off completely at 30 mph. Its top speed of 70.86 mph was a world record that held for more than a decade.
