The USS Susquehanna (1850) was a prominent sidewheel steam frigate of the U.S. Navy, famous for serving as Commodore Matthew Perry’s flagship during the 1853 expedition to Japan. It was a hybrid sailing/steam ship, 257 feet long, active in the Civil War, and a critical part of the "Black Ships" fleet that opened Japan to trade
Decommissioned at the New York Navy Yard on 14 January 1868, Susquehanna was laid up until she was sold for scrapping on 27 September 1883 to E. Stannard of New York City.
