USAAF 78th FG, 82nd FS, "No Guts No Glory", Ben Mayo, D-Day, June 6th 1944
The 78th Fighter Group operated with different variants of the P-47 until late in 1944 when it phased into the P-51 'Mustang'. The 78th remained in England until October 1945. This aircraft has the serial 226671 and codes MX-X, depicting the aircraft flown by Lt. Col. Ben Mayo, CO of the 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group. Sprayed silver overall with D-Day, June 6th 1944 invasion markings added and the black-and-white checkered cowling of the 78th Fighter Group, this aircraft is now fully restored and displayed at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, where it still continues to fly.
