The Cleveland class of light cruisers was planned on the eve on World War II and when the Navy Board made the decision came to mass produce designs already approved, the Cleveland Class was destined to become the largest class of cruisers built for the US Navy. 27 ships in the class were completed as light cruisers, 9 of the hulls were converted to Independence class light carriers. This class was designed as an improvement to the Brooklyn class with a long hull for higher speed and increased anti-aircraft armorment. The name ship of the class, Cleveland was completed in 1942 and served in several battles during the Pacific war, sending the Japanese destroyers Minegumo and Murasame to their end.
